CAD (Computer-Aided Design) is a technology used by architects, engineers and designers, which allows us to draw in 2D or 3D on the computer, to easily review and edit these drawings.
It may sound interesting to you but now look around, if the things you see are less than 30-40 years old, it's very likely CAD designed. Everything from the chair you are sitting on to the computer or phone you are reading this blog with, to the electrical circuits produced for this computer, have been drawn with CAD programs.
Although many CAD software are in the market today, we can list the most commonly used ones as follows:
AutoCAD is one of the most widely used vector-based (i.e. resolution independent) drawing programs in the world, developed by the USA-based AutoDesk company since the early 1980s. Its files have a .dwg extension (derived from the word drawing), and it uses the .dxf extension so that it can be used with other CAD programs. The house you are in right now was probably built based on a dwg file drawn by an architect.
Revit is a CAD software as well as a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software. for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers, designers and contractors. At the same time, 2D section, plan and view sheets of the project drawn in 3D in the Revit program can be obtained automatically. Different disciplines mentioned above can design simultaneously on a single model. In addition, it is a software that helps to follow up not only in the design phase, but also in the phases after the building is built, such as operation and maintenance. Anyway, BIM roughly means to plan and track various stages in the building's life cycle.
Catia is a CAD software of choice in the automotive, shipbuilding and aerospace industries, first released in 1981 by the French Dassault Systèmes. Used across different engineering disciplines including surfacing & shape design, electrical, fluid and electronic systems design, mechanical engineering and systems engineering.
SolidWorks is a 3D solid modeling program first released in 1995. It is known as the first 3D CAD software integrated into Windows. SolidWorks is used in many fields such as machinery, furniture, plastic/sheet metal molding, automation, mechatronics, industrial product design. It is one of the most common 3D CAD software used in the world.
Inventor is a CAD program created by AutoDesk, used for 3D mechanical design, simulation, visualization, and documentation. Since Inventor users can save the files in dwg format, it is possible to work with AutoCAD without any problems. One of its most interesting features is its functional design, it automatically generates the geometry of a design based on its functionality.
Apart from the 5 programs mentioned above, there are many more CAD software, many of them also fall into the category of CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) programs. CAD software, which has been added to its numbers over time, is becoming more user-friendly and gaining more space in our lives by integrating with technologies such as mobile compatibility, 3D printing and cloud interaction.
That was all about CAD, drop a like and share it if you found it informative.
Goodbye have a nice day, meet you in next blog!
